Genesis Introduces Groundbreaking Heated Windscreen Technology for Safer Winter Driving

Frankfurt, Germany – Luxury automotive brand Genesis is redefining winter driving with its revolutionary 48-volt Metal-Coated Heated Glass technology. Announced on December 17, 2024, this innovation, developed by Hyundai Motor Group, is set to enhance safety, efficiency, and convenience for drivers navigating harsh winter conditions.

The new system dramatically outperforms conventional defrosting solutions, clearing frost from the entire windscreen surface within just five minutes, even in temperatures as low as -18°C. This is three times faster than traditional methods, which can take over 15 minutes in similar conditions.

The Technology Behind the Innovation

The core of this breakthrough lies in the use of a dedicated 48-volt system that powers a 20-layer transparent metal coating on the windscreen. The system efficiently converts energy from the vehicle’s 800-volt electrical system, delivering consistent heat across the glass.

Beyond defrosting, the Metal-Coated Heated Glass integrates seamlessly with electric vehicles' thermal energy management systems. Compared to standard HVAC systems, it consumes 10% less power, enabling faster defrosting while conserving energy a critical factor for maximising the range of electric cars.

Year-Round Benefits

This advanced technology isn't limited to winter applications. During summer, the metal-coated layer reflects over 60% of total solar energy, reducing cabin temperatures by 2-3°C. This enhanced energy efficiency supports additional in-car features and increases overall driving comfort.

Tested rigorously on Genesis’ electric GV70 and GV60 models, the technology has demonstrated unparalleled performance in extreme conditions, solidifying its potential for adoption in future models.

Supporting Autonomous Driving

As vehicles transition towards autonomy, the importance of clear windscreens cannot be overstated. Autonomous systems depend on clean surfaces to enable sensors and cameras to gather accurate data. Genesis’ new technology ensures frost and moisture-free glass, enhancing the reliability of these systems.

The Metal-Coated Heated Glass also eliminates the visible tungsten wires found in conventional solutions, providing an unobstructed view for drivers and paving the way for advanced technologies like augmented reality navigation and bold head-up displays.

Innovation for a Sustainable Future

“Genesis cars are designed to make journeys as easy and comfortable as possible all year round, but safety and convenience become paramount in colder temperatures,” said Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center.

While the technology is not yet confirmed for production, Hyundai Motor Group has filed patents in major markets, signaling its potential for future integration.

Genesis: A Vision of Excellence

Since its European launch in 2021, Genesis has consistently delivered luxury vehicles underpinned by cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices. The brand’s commitment to innovation is evident, with features like facial recognition technology on the GV60 and now the introduction of Metal-Coated Heated Glass.

As Genesis aims for carbon neutrality by 2035, this latest development exemplifies the company’s blend of style, technology, and environmental consciousness—offering a glimpse into the future of premium electric vehicles.
