Volkswagen has launched production of its latest SUV, the Volkswagen Tayron, at the brand’s flagship Wolfsburg plant. With employees from various departments present, the first Tayron—a sleek Ultra Violet Metallic model featuring a 2.0-litre TDI engine rolled off Assembly Line 4 this week. The Tayron becomes the fourth model produced at the site, joining the Golf, Tiguan, and Touran.
A Milestone for Wolfsburg
The Tayron’s Start of Production (SoP) marks a significant moment for Volkswagen. Plant Manager Uwe Schwartz commended the teamwork involved:
“A car launch is always a team effort... many cogs meshed perfectly from the press shop to body construction, painting, assembly, and vehicle completion.”
Schwartz also highlighted the challenge of integrating Tayron production into ongoing Tiguan manufacturing processes, crediting the team for sticking closely to the planned timeline.
The Tayron will be available in European showrooms from March, offering buyers seven engine options, including two advanced plug-in hybrid drives capable of over 100 kilometres of electric-only range.

Positioned as Volkswagen’s second-largest SUV in Europe after the Touareg, the Tayron aims to build on the success of its predecessor, the Tiguan Allspace. The SUV features an optional seven-seat layout and will be available with various cutting-edge technologies, including next-generation hybrids for reduced emissions and increased efficiency.
Deputy Chairman of the Works Council, Jürgen Mahnkopf, praised the new model’s potential:
“Customers in China are already excited about this car, and the Tayron will also find many buyers in Europe.”
